Kindred Spirits
Paula Becker and Clara Westhoff
Paula Becker and Clara Westhoff met in 1898 as young art students in the artists’ colony of Worpswede. This marked the beginning of a friendship shaped by both highs and lows. Both young women were in search of artistic self-determination and their own forms of expression — Paula Becker in painting, Clara Westhoff in sculpture.
The exhibition at the Barkenhoff traces the artistic and personal development of both artists through selected works and key stages of their lives. At the heart of the show are sculptures, paintings, and drawings, complemented by historical photographs, original documents, and quotes from the artists themselves.
