Haus im Schluh

For more than 80 years visitors to the artists’ village of Worpswede have been charmed by a very special treasure to be found in the shade of towering old trees. If you walk out of the centre of the village and turn into the sandy lane called "Im Schluh”, you will sense that you have left all of the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind. Up ahead in a misty hollow, two romantic old timber-framed farmhouses with deep and heavy thatched roofs form a picturesque ensemble: Haus im Schluh.

This atmospheric location was founded in 1920 by Martha Vogeler, Heinrich Vogeler’s first wife. After separating from her husband, it was here that she took the paintings, the old furniture and the beautiful furnishings of Barkenhoff with her.

The Heinrich Vogeler Collection, comprising paintings, etchings and furniture, constitutes the main part of the museum even today. Supplemented by valuable, often curious and interesting objects from farmsteads as well as traditional handicrafts which Martha and Heinrich collected, the overall atmosphere is truly special.
