Hans am Ende

Hans am Ende (* 31 December 1864 in Trier; † 9 July 1918 in Stettin) came to Worpswede for the first time in 1889 as a companion of Otto Modersohn and finally stayed there for good in 1895. His style of painting, influenced by his studies at the Munich Academy, was light in its colouration and classic in its composition. He was both a portrait painter and above all a landscape artist; his works embodied a harmonious combination of idyllic nature and pathos. In Worpswede an Ende was also an influential etcher, among his students learning this technique was Heinrich Vogeler. Hans am Ende volunteered for service in the First World War and died in 1918 from the results of a wound.
