Colony and artists

From a remote farming village to Germany’s quintessential artists’ colony. This sums up the development of Worpswede from 1884 to the present. When Fritz Mackensen first discovered the lofty skies above the Teufelsmoor as a source of inspiration, little did he know how important the little village on the Weyerberg would become. The first generation of artists settling in Worpswede laid the cornerstone for a development that continues to this day. On the following pages we would like to take you along this path and introduce to you the actors of Worpswede’s “first hour”.
