»Heinrich Vogeler and Walter Müller - The Master of Book Art«

»Heinrich Vogeler and Walter Müller - The Master of Book Art«
Cabinet exhibition at Haus im Schluh
12 March to 5 November 2017

In addition to his extensive permanent exhibition the Haus im Schluh shows in two cabinets book designs and illustrations by Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) and Walter Müller (1901-1975).

In the 19th century, Heinrich Vogeler set standards. His personal and lyrical style distinguishes him from his colleagues from the Munich and Vienna schools. As a young man, Vogeler was an »in-house graphic designer« of the art journal »Die Insel« in Munich and as a designer involved in the design of the luxurious salons of its editor Alfred Walter Heymel. Vogeler became a sought-after book designer of the Jugendstil movement.

Walter Müller, a son-in-law of Heinrich Vogeler - he married his daughter Bettina in 1920 - was a child of the 20th century. He first appeared in the Worpswede art scene as a painter and graphic artist of the expressionist style. Through his friendship with Manfred Hausmann he was given the opportunity to create numerous book designs in various publishing houses. Black and white and colored pencil and pencil drawings, gouaches as well as woodcuts show his playful and humorous talent.

Introduction by Berit Müller in a matinee on 19 March at 12.00 am to the opening of the exhibition.
